Inaugural Community Learning Event Helps Families Navigate Childhood Hearing Loss

TUSCALOOSA, Al., December 7, 2018 – The Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell) Alabama chapter will host the first-ever community learning expo on hearing loss at the University of Alabama. By making connections between families and professionals, this expo seeks to raise awareness about the prevalence of hearing loss in Alabama while educating parents and caregivers about the latest in pediatric hearing solutions. Families and caregivers of children who are deaf and hard of hearing can come together for a fun morning of activities for children, as well as learning events and presentations for adults. This is the first of many community expos jointly hosted all over the United States by AG Bell, Phonak and Advanced Bionics.

“We are excited to launch the first-ever AG Bell community learning expo with the AG Bell Alabama chapter. This expo, in partnership with Phonak and Advanced Bionics, will not only help raise awareness but will also open doors for the local community by providing educational programs, networking opportunities and resources that connect professionals and families with children who are deaf or hard of hearing,” said Lisa McBee-Granados, AG Bell chapter relations manager.

Phonak and Advanced Bionics have partnered with AG Bell Alabama to help implement the inaugural community learning event.

“Advanced Bionics and Phonak are very passionate about unlocking the doors to a child’s developing brain,” said Sarah Downing, audiologist and senior director of consumer outreach and engagement at Advanced Bionics. “That’s why we’re so proud to support AG Bell through the first of eight Community Expos around the country, allowing us to provide hands-on education for parents so they can ‘Experience the Possibilities’ for their child. As powerfully connected companies with best-in-class hearing technology, we’re dedicated to helping children throughout their hearing loss journeys with any solution they might need, so they can become powerfully connected to their families and friends.”

All 58 hospitals in Alabama have newborn screening programs, screening 95 percent of children born in the state of Alabama. In Alabama, 60-180 children are born deaf or hard of hearing annually and 16 percent of Alabamans over 18 report some degree of hearing loss.
